How to clean your brushes

1. Clean after use. For professional use, clean your brushes after every client. For personal use, clean them regularly depending on how often you use them.
2. Use a gentle cleanser. Use a mild brush cleanser, gentle liquid soap or a professional makeup-brush cleaning solution. Avoid harsh detergents, alcohol-heavy cleaners or strong chemicals.
3. Wet the bristles, not the handle. Hold the brush with the bristles pointing downward and wet only the bristle area with lukewarm water. Do not soak the entire brush, and avoid letting water enter the ferrule.
4. Clean gently. Apply a small amount of cleanser and gently massage the bristles with your fingers or a brush-cleaning mat, without pulling, twisting or rubbing the fibres.
5. Rinse thoroughly. Rinse under clean, lukewarm running water until the water runs clear.
6. Remove excess water. Gently squeeze the bristles between clean fingers or a soft towel. Never twist, wring or pull the bristles.
7. Reshape and dry. Reshape the brush head with your fingers and lay it flat on a clean, dry towel with the bristles extending slightly beyond the edge of a surface so air can circulate. Allow the brush to air-dry completely before storing or using it again. Do not dry brushes vertically with wet bristles pointing upwards.

How often should you clean your brushes?

Personal use: clean regularly, depending on frequency of use and the products used. Professional artists: clean and disinfect brushes appropriately between clients, following professional hygiene practice. Brushes used with cream, liquid or heavy-pigment products should be cleaned more often than brushes used only with powder.
